No section number currently exists for leather wall panels … any suggestions on location? Division 06? 09? Other?
How are they applied - like a wall covering or like wood paneling? What type of skill/workmanship is required?
I would suggest using a number subordinate to 09 72 00 if applied directly as a wall covering or 09 77 00 if fastened to framing or a panel material.
Shouldn’t it be “Leather Wall Paneling”?
I’m on the edge of my seat waiting to see when “Spandex Wall Paneling” will be specified.
One note of caution: Per the 2003 IBC, the leather WILL need to be applied to a noncombustible backing, and the leather itself will need to have either a Class A, B, or C classification, depending on whether or not the building is sprinklered, the occupancy classification of the space where it is installed, and if it’s part of an egress component (corridor, stairway, passageway, etc.).
Refer to Chapter 8 and Table 803.5.
Several years ago we specified leather-covered doors for a renovation project. We did require a Class A designation for both the leather and the plywood substrate.
I believe that they ended up using leather that was FAA-approved for use in airplane seats (which is at least as stringent as a Class A flame spread).
Spandex wall covering–that’s a stretch.

Thanks to all for the great input. This is a situation where it’s a leather covered paneling. It’s based on a Spinneybeck system but what they consider to be a system description really isn’t and, of course, there is no section number identified.
Because the leather is being applied to the panel off site, and it’s the panel that is being installed by the contractor on site, I’d put it in Division 6 - maybe 06 4221 Leather-Faced Wood Paneling?
My suggestion would be Section 09 77 33 “Leather-Wrapped Panels”. My reason for placing it here is that the description under 09 70 00 states “wall finishes applied over solid substrates.” And, the level 2 number of 77 is for “Special Wall Surfacing”, which I think we all can agree that this case is. Even if it’s not “wrapped” as my title suggests (just trying to stay consistent with the “Fabric-Wrapped Panels” in 09 77 23), I still think this is the most appropriate location.
If you look up leather in the keyword index in the back of the hardcopy MF04 book, it suggests 09 72 00 Wall Coverings as the place to describe leather wall coverings.
If the leather will be applied at the factory, you could place a reference in a Division 06 paneling Section to say look in Division 09 Section Wall Coverings for…, same as you might do for shop applied paints or coatings on steel.
Or you could write a section just for this type of assembly and stick it all in division 06 like Lynne suggests. With a flexible system there are really a lot of different ways you could do it.
