We’re working on a hospital project that requires a surface-mounted, manual sliding wood door, that also must swing open (breakout) when fully closed. (No, I don’t know why.)
I’ve contacted the usual suspects - hardware consultants, ICU door manufacturers, Hettich, Hefele, Dorma, Crown, a couple others - and haven’t found anything. Suggestions?

Conclusion: Doesn’t exist, might be done as a custom door but no one would commit. Using standard surface-mounted ICU door instead.

Don’t you just love it when a designer “wants” something that doesn’t exist and can’t be done?
I realize that’s one of the ways new products are created, but part of me thinks “get real”!
Why was wood wanted? Opacity? Aesthetics? Could something other than a standard glass panel be used in the ICU door? (We’ve used decorative glass) It would still have the aluminum frame, but that could be coated.
A wood door in an ICU? Not plam faced aluminum, but wood. I wonder how hospital risk management would feel about this one.
I too have been sent on a few snipe hunts initiated by owner requests.
Not long ago, I had an owner who wanted a double-acting door with push plates on each side. Problem was, the opening was a 1-hour rated fire wall. After a couple of days of trying to explain the need for positive latching, the owner said nevermind.
David - that triggers and interesting thought to mind. Have any of you guys specified a left handed smoke shifter or bacon stretcher? Sky hook it my other favorite. Is it Friday already?
