The line between selective demolition and cutting and patching is a very fine one with many areas overlapping one another.
We’re working on a project where we have both and I think cutting and patching is redundant because a majority of the provisions usually specified in the section can (or should) also be found in selective demo.
What are y’all doing when your work includes remodeling of, and addition to an existing building?
Cutting and Patching are in Division 01, as they often apply to all Divisions. (actually, in 01 7300 Execution)
That tends to simplify things and allows the Division 02 section for demolition to focus on just that.
Cutting and patching as strictly defined is for out of sequence work. I have a drywall partition up with framing, drywall, and joint compount with the electrical already in. Someone comes along and wants to put in another electrical outlet (or the contractor has forgotten one); the resulting activity is cutting and patching.
I would not permit a “demolisher” of any kind to do any “cutting and patching.”
When possible, we try to get the original installer to perform the patching after the ‘cutting’ work is performed. Definitely not the same as demo.
Demo is cutting etc without the patching.

You can have cutting and patching on a green field new construction project, but for there to be demolition, you need there to be a building that was there before your project.
