In the Masterformat Introduction and Applications Guide, they state: In most Divisions, title and number assignments at Levels 3 and 4 have been allocated in spaced groups that generally follow this pattern: 13, 16, 19, then 23, 26, 29, and so on. This was done to provide adequate spacing between titles and numbers. The choice of these specific numbers has no meaning beyond spacing.A user does not need to follow the above conventions and is free to use any appropriate number in the assignment of new numbers for new titles [within certain parameters].
I was on the MasterFormat Maintenance Task Team for 10 years. I see the 13, 16, 19, etc pattern as more for the Task Teams assignment of new numbers for subsequent editions of MasterFormat, than as a requirement for the individual specifiers assignment of a one-off number for a specific project.
I have the MasterFormat book right here, but I missed "A user does not need to follow the above conventions and is free to use any appropriate number in the assignment of new numbers for new titles.
