SDI vs. NAAMM

What is the difference between the two organizations and their recommended door specifications?

Not much. SDI does “standard” steel doors, and HMMA (part of NAAMM) does “custom steel doors”. I have a one or two page sheet comparing SDI standard and HMMA custom specifications, and would be happy to email to you (or anyone else).

I ran into this odd fact recently.

On steel door frames…

NAAMM calls out for an equal rabbet dimensions (1-15/16" both sides)

SDI calls out for an unequal rabbet dimensions (1-9/16" and 1-15/16" door leaf side)

I also believe that there are differences in allowed primers.

So is that pulling a rabbet out of a hat, or what?

The unequal rabbet dimension is so that the same frame can accomodate doors of both 1-3/4-inch and 1-3/8-inch thicknesses. SDI does have a standard for 1-3/8-inch thick steel doors.

Is there any mention of resistance to water penetration in SDI (or HMMA for that matter)? Looking for something similar to that found in alum entrances storefront - there it is included in masterspec’s performance requirements, along with field qc to test it, but there seems to be no similar text in hollow metal, or from what I can see in the standards either.

The AAMA North American Fenestration Standard includes requirements for side-hinged doors, oriented principally to the pre-hung residential market, I think. However, (not having studied it recently) I suspect it could be applied to any type of side-hinged door assembly a manufacturer was willing to test.

As to hollow metal doors and frames, it is interesting to note that many manufacturers can make a product that meets either standard.
