Psychiatric room padding

I have two projects now that require “padded rooms” and its been 20 years since I did one of these. I know that there are actual pads that can be hung on the walls (and floors); there are panelized systems, and I’ve heard that there are pick-proof coatings that provide minimal padding but can be applied directly to walls and floors. Our owner is looking to us to make a recommendation, so what is the current state of the art on these products and system? Any recommendations or “don’t ever use this” comments?

I believe this is precisely what you are looking for, Anne. I remember that there was some inherent property of their product that made it stand apart as superior to the competition, something that the competition doesn’t even mention, so be alert if you need to ‘shop around’. I’m sure Lynn would be happy to point out what that is.

I have specified Gold Medal Safety Padding by Marathon Engineering Corporation. The client was happy with it even though it was quite expensive. (this was a teen psychiatric wing and we did one room)

And now for the $64,000 question:

Any ideas where one would locate this under MasterFormat 2004?

Seems like there ought to be a better place than 09 77 00.

Didn’t see anything under 11 70 00 that would lead me to believe it should be there.

Nothing in the Key Word Index under “cell,” “wall,” “padding,” or “psychiatric.”

Any suggestions?

I thought this was standard equipment in all specifiers’ offices so that we don’t hurt ourselves when we bang our heads against the wall!

In all seriousness, you might want to check with someone who does correctional projects, I seem to remember running into these when doing detention facilities, but I don’t remember where we specified them.

Good question. Personally, I’d probably place it in 11 73 00 “Patient Care Equipment” since its intended purpose is to protect (care) for the patient.

You might number and title it as 11 73 13 “Pshyciatric Padding” (notice I used a gerund to make it a work result!) :slight_smile:

Actually, don’t call it “Pshychiatic Padding”…call it “Psychiatric Padding”.

Sheesh…you’d think I’d check the spelling before posting!

Plus, Doug gets a star for getting the pronunciation of my last name. Typically, it gets the “J” sound (Jeren) or more commonly, “GREEN”…boy, I hate that one!

If memory is correct the products where specified in Detention Equipment 11190 which in MF 04 is 11 19 00.
