I am currently writing office masters for the following topics below. I am using some old specs from a consultant (who is now an employee).
It seems that MasterFormat does not do a good job addressing historic preservation “work results”. Can you please help me out with ideas? I have my own opinion on where they should go so let’s compare notes. Thanks!
024294 - Salvage of Brick and Cast Stone
040170 - Existing Masonry Cleaning
045182 - Existing Sealant Removal
045180 - Paint Removal from Masonry
Me, too. I typically include provisions for these tasks in other sections: Selective Demo, Maintenance of Msry, and Joint Sealants.
MasterFormat does include a “narrowscope” section 04 0120.52 “Unit Msry Cleaning” where cleaning & paint removal could be spec’d. I typically avoid decimals in section numbers, so would use 04 0123.
If it seems important to have a unique section for salvage, it might make sense to use existing MF section 02 4291 “Removal & Salvage of Historic Construction Materials” that would include provisions for brick & cast stone, among other bldg elements.
A Division 01 section, similar to a LEED section, could help tie the whole process and intent together, too. It could serve to define the desired result in one place.
