David, I received your email and invitation with no problems; both in my inbox (sorry, George). This Discourse-hosted site looks to have more functionality than did the old 4Specs host.
Will the existing 4Specs discussions and threads be transferred to the Discourse site? A few years ago, some 4Specs threads disappeared; I had contacted Colin and he said he was doing some housekeeping and archiving on the site, and some threads were inadvertently dropped.
How long will we have after we post to be able to edit a posting? It’s 20 minutes on the current 4Specs, but would be good if that could be extended.
Good start!
Is there a logout button? I don’t see one easily visible, but that may be just me.
I don’t know that. There is an overall system control I found that will log someone out after a long time of being logged in. I think it is set to 60 days.
Found it: Under your profile.
I plan to import all of the existing 4specs into Discourse if the experiment goes well. I don’t want to lose anything either. I am not sure about the “edit” window. I did find that there is a revert option after making an edit.
Hello. I’m trying out this forum as well.
Welcome Elias. Thanks for checking it out.
OK, thanks. That’s not a really obvious location.
Notification settings are under your profile dropdown and and the bottom button (person icon). There is a separate tab for notifications.
The last thing we need is another cat, but sometimes, as Rick Blaine said, “It seems that destiny has taken a hand.” Meet Dante, who has apparently lived his own Inferno on the streets of St. Louis. His jaw is broken, several teeth are missing, his face is contorted into a crooked expression, and he has a gaping wound on his cheek. On to cap it all off, we had the vet cut off his balls yesterday.
Despite it all, he seems to be the sweetest cat, and he is enjoying his second night indoors.
All this backstory just because because I am trying to post a picture here…
Why the name? Dante Alighieri’s Inferno starts on Easter weekend, 726 years ago.
Hey George, thanks for sharing the story. Come to think of it, I did not see any of my daughter’s cats while visiting yesterday. Normally I am the first person they find, despite my preference for dogs.
Thanks for the invite, Dave. I’ll explore more a little later.
Thanks for helping with the review. Looking forward to your comments.

What did Marlon do to get put in the penalty box?
Some thoughts on the new 4Specs Discussion Forum:
-
I like the larger text format. My eyes are not what they used to be. Yes, I know I can adjust the size in the “old” forum.
-
I like that there are several ways to do the same thing and get to the same page - as is the case with many websites. That means I don’t have to remember the exact path every time.
-
Chrome always identifies the old forum URL/webpage as “Not Secure” (though not the main 4Specs homepage itself). It will be nice to have that flag go away.
-
Is it your intent to roll the old forum discussions into the new forum?
-
I’m assuming Channels here are like Channels on the Microsoft Teams app?
-
The filter feature will likely be useful when the forum is fully populated.
-
Something I like on the old forum that I don’t see here is the ability to print an individual post.
-
In the old forum, I don’t understood the function of the two icons to the left of the printer icon, and there is no popup note explaining:

-
Nice to have a user dashboard.
-
Good to have some basic “how to” info in the Welcome to 4Specs Discussion Forum! Maybe that kind of info can be incorporated in the sidebar so that it’s always available for quick reference.
Yes the plan is to migrate the existing forum to a new software.
Yes Categories are like Teams Channels.
Print? What? This is the 21st Century. Everything is digital don’t you know. Ctrl-p allows you to print the entire or select pages of a topic.
The two buttons on the old forum are delete and edit for a post.
Hope that is not a prized plant.
