I am looking for a specification (preferably a performance spec…but if you have a proprietary one, I won’t be too proud to borrow it either) for wood entrances and storefronts. I have a client required to provide this for a historical project located here in the midwest. Lots of cold, rain, and snow in the winter. Your help is much appreciated. Thanks. Several years ago, I did a similar storefront project, historic, using MasterSpec’s “Architectural Woodwork” section. Performance was based on AWI. For historic approval, the key will be your detailing, which may rule out standard proprietary systems.

I agree. Last year I wtote a Wood Window Wall and Entrances Section around Duratherm. Wood was all African Mahogany with the Sikkens finish. Its installed and looks great. If you or anyone is ever in the Chicago area, go to Ravinia in Highland Park, the summer home of the CSO. The new two story dining pavillion is just to your left as you go thru the gates. I used text from Masterspec, AWI and Duratherm to creat the section.
I just wanted to make a note of the difference between a wood entrance or wood window wall that is assembled from ganging standard fixed or operable wood windows together and a timber-glass curtain wall.
Timber-glass curtain walls are designed like aluminium-glass curtain wall constructions. A non-load bearing wood faade consists of a timber frame on the inside, the composition of which meets functional and design demands for infillings, glazing, opening elements, insulated wood or metal panels, etc. Each infilling is retained by aluminium clamping profiles on all four sides. Construction components are comprised of laminated timbers for a mullion and transom construction. The timber mullion depths are calculated and designed to meet the span and windload requirements of the project.
Timber-glass curtain walls have an extensive history in Europe due to their high thermal performance. Recently, they are becoming more available in North America. Specifying, timber-glass curtain walls is identical to specifying aluminium-glass curtain walls.
The bidding and installation process is performed by a local glass and glazing contractor.
