What section number and title do you use for concrete floor sealers? MasterFormat says that 03 3500 includes sealing, but doesn’t have a number for it.
MF states about 03 35 00 “Includes: leveling, floating, troweling, and other treatments of flat concrete including sealing and hardening. treatment of formed concrete surfaces to achieve certain surface characteristics.”
Sealing is there.
So is anything to do with finishing of the placed concrete.
Louis,
Callison has chosen to specify concrete floor sealers in Division 09 as a special floor finish applied near the end of the project.
Polished/hardened/densified/sealed floors are specified as a complete system in Division 03.
E-mail me if you want samples for Division 09.
I specify Concrete Sealers in Section 071900 or 071916 for Silane Water Repellents. I find if I include it in Division 3 it is included in the concrete construction as part of the curing process, in my work penetrating sealers are used all the time to treat cured concrete parking decks or patios, providing protection from UV and vehicle abuse (esp when the Developer won’t spring for a traffic coating). The waterproofing subcontractor typically has that work included in his scope.
Thanks, guys! I think I’ll follow Wayne’s advice since the application of the sealer is late in the project and not really part of ‘concreting.’ David Stutzman gave me the same advice.
The beauty of MASTERFORMAT in full bloom?
I would also probably place the information in Division 09 but I would make sure to have a note in Division 03 to reference the sealer just to make sure the concrete contractor does not add a “cure & seal” like product of their own. It could interfere with the installation of the division 09 material.
