Looking for an epoxy coating /flooring for a new concrete balcony, repair of slopes required and an attractive appearance, project in So Florida. Price no more than $5-6 per sf.

Hello, Jerome. I have had to specify similar work, not for SFL obviously, but in Cleveland, right up against Lake Erie. So, the environment is hostile in its own way with lots of snow-melting chemicals and freeze-thaw cycles. I strongly suggest talking with a waterproofing/restoration contractor, or at least a distributor of BASF, Conproco, and Prosoco restoration products in your area. A distributor has a few more tools to work with than a single manufacturer and deals with these challenges daily. The potential risk associated with balconies is very high, as I am sure you already know. I hope this goes well for you.

Prosoco has no possible topping products. My BASF REP is on vac, I expect he will be in touch, I have never specified Conproco, but I will be reaching out to them. Thanks David.

You need concrete repair products from Sika to get the deck fixed and then a urethane traffic coating over that (many to choose from - Lymtal, Neogard, etc.).

ANON, the specs for the job included several trusted manufacturers for pedestrian traffic coatings and patching of concrete repairs, however the Architect wants a product that will provide the look of polished concrete when cured. for the price of porcelain tile installed. Just looking at other options. Anon you must be a SIKA rep.

Wayne I specify Ardex for interior work. For exterior work there must be an experienced local Ardex rep available. The Ardex rep is not local to So Florida.

No. I am not a SIKA rep. I am an in-house specifier that has had great experience with SIKA for concrete repair technical advice and product offerings.

There may be other manufacturer’s, but I have had great success with SIKA. Was just trying to pass on that knowledge to you.

Hi Jerome. A couple of things:

  1. According to the International Polished Concrete Institute you should limit use of polished concrete in exterior to matte (100 grit) finish. See http://www.ipcionline.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=polishedConcrete.faq#10 and scroll down.
  2. Any repairs or other actions taken will be VERY noticeable so if the quality of the concrete, as poured and finished, is not what is wanted, it will never be what is wanted.
  3. The requirements for concrete that is to be polished is a lot more stringent than typical concrete. Here are your minimums - http://www.ipcionline.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=polishedConcrete.specifications
  4. If there is any desire for an affordable pigmented finish instead, I’d consider using Keim or Nawkaw silicates; they’ll permanently seal the concrete with a vapor permeable finish and the range of colors is pretty good.
