I am completing specs to a one story strip shopping (big box)center, one of the spaces will be occupied by a TJ Max and the store has provided guide outline specifications, one of the line items is a request for Burglar Bars, I am assuming I can add these to Metal Fabrications spec section (surprise this client uses 48 divisions), but the specifications are for shell building only and limited scope. I seldom specify Security items like this, they are excluded from my agreements as typically the Owner has a Security Consultant on the team. One odd part of the guide spec reads as follows: “Duct penetrations through the roof will require burglar bars” - how is this done, are the burglar bars placed on the roof around the duct penetration or inside the building or inside the duct?
Jerome - Typically, the “burglar bars” would be installed inside the ducts to prevent someone from crawling through the duct from one space to the other.
They may also be installed at rooftop hatches and at curbs of rooftop A/C units to prevent people from gaining access at these points.
Security bars in the duct is a fairly common item, and is usually part of the HVAC spec and locations identified on the mechanical drawings. We do this a lot for pharmacies for example.
I have seen these in Division 5. The burglar bars were rebar or steel rods welded to the RTU frames. Misc. Metals type of item.
You can have security bars added as part of the AHU roof-top curbs. We have specified them as part of a Thycurb (or Pate curb)so the curbs come to the job with the burglar bars already in place.
