Where oh where in Masterformat 2004 would bullet-resistant glazing be specified? I’ve found a section 08 88 56 Ballistics-resistant Glazing, but we’re not trying to stop missiles, just small caliber bullets at a drive-thru bank facility.
Small caliber bullets are ballistics too. HOwever if you have other glazing in your project, Specing it in 08 80 00 would not be out of line.
088853 Security Windows might do if you need a free-standing section. C.R. Laurence has some units that might do.
I agree with Margaret. Usually when I’ve specified ballistic-resistant glazing, I’ve put it in 088000. However, for a project with both blast- and ballistic-resistant glazing, I did use a separate section for those products.
Ballistic-resistant glazing is just a specialized type of laminated glazing. It does have to comply with different standards, UL 752 for example (there are others also). In addition to glass lites, it may also contain polycarbonate lites; depends on what type of bullets you need to resist.
Also, again depending on the threat level, you may need ballistic-resistant framing for the glazed lites.
I’m not trying to be flippant but check to see that the designer has also detailed a partition with an equivalent rating as the glazing and frame it contains. It has happened before.
