Is fire-retardant-treated (FRT) wheatboard or strawboard available?
Have used FRT particleboard and FRT MDF–but the designers want wheatboard, for exposed balcony fascia panels in a theater.
The other option is to finish the wheatboard with a fire-retardant varnish, but that’s a soft finish and I’d prefer not to go that route if we don’t have to.
Just posted on the Dow bioproducts website today Dow BioProducts, a division of Dow Canada, will no longer operate and will cease manufacturing operations of WOODSTALK. The website does mention some possible alternative manufacturers; Im not familiar with any of them.

This is unfortunate because we specify wheatboard all the time and understand that wheatboard is cheaper than particle board.
It’s interesting that they decided to stop making Woodstalk. Just last week in Atlanta the Dow rep at GreenBuild was more than happy to tell me how great a product Woodstalk is (was).
We have been specifying Woodstalk as a contractor “option” to particle board in our millwork section so I was dismayed to see that Dow has stopped manufacturing the product. Is anyone else specifying a similar product that they could recommend?
Also, Anon, it is quite possible the Dow rep who was telling you about their product was not aware that the plant was going to be closing …
LSI makes a proprietary agri-board “EnvironmentCore” which they use standard in all their casework. However, it is an upcharge for their competitors.
Also, another company Primeboard makes “PremiumBlend” board, but I don’t know anything about them. Re: http://www.primeboard.com/preblend.html
LSI now has an upcharge for their agriboard core.
SierraPine Limited; Roseville, CA. ASD. 800-676-3339; www.sierrapine.com, manufactures several MDF no-added formaldehyde products under various service marks. If memory serves, product is both heavier and more expensive that standard particleboard or MDF.
