The Tile Council of North America (TCNA) recently approved major changes to the ANSI standards for thin-set mortars used for the installation of ceramic and natural stone tile. ANSI A118.15 Improved Modified Dry-Set Cement Mortar. ANSI A118.15 recognizes mortars that exhibit higher shear bond strength in all installation situations. For instance, the 28-day shear bond to impervious tile requirement for a standard A118.4 thin-set mortar is 200 psi and 400 psi for an improved thin-set mortar meeting the requirements of ANSI A118.15

I hope this doesn’t mean that TCNA will double the size of their Manual again. Will this appear in the 2013 edition?

Yes this will appear in the 2013 edition. it will not be published until late April or May. Hopefully it will not triple in size unless you need a new door stop since we no longer get yellow pages. I wonder how many companies are out of business because of the internet? and i an sure Terry O"Hara will keep you updated.

Dale - You previously suggested 300 and 450 psi values to distinguish from “lesser” products (200 psi). Are you recommending ANSI stds instead of 300 & 450 psi values?

Yes it is actually very similar to what I recommend. ANSI A118.15 Improved Modified Dry-Set Cement Mortar must meet a 28 day shear bond to impervious tile of a least 400 psi. So for example any Vertical installation with Porcelain tile I would recommend the new ANSI A118.15 Improved Mortar. If you have a broomed concrete floor installing a ceramic tile then I would recommend the ANSI A118.4
