Hello, friends. Can anyone suggest an optimum section number for smoke baffles at stairwells? Thank you.

Since these can be fabricated from a variety of materials (although glass is probably the most common form), using one of the material sections may not be suitable.

I suggest using Division 10 “Specialties” and more specifically Section 10 40 00 “Safety Specialties” for a broad-scope Level 2 number. If you want to be more specific, then maybe creating a new narrow-scope Level 2 number might work, such as 10 46 00 “Smoke Baffles.”

I have always spec’d these in the Glazing section. They’re glazier’s work, w/ glass panels the primary component (usually 1/2" clear tempered) and metal channels & butt-glazing sealant spec’d as auxiliary materials.

I have always used Section 07 8700 - Smoke Containment Barriers.

MasterFormat describes this section thusly:

Includes: draftstopping panels suspended from ceiling or placed in plenum cavities to prevent or to inhibit the spread of smoke.

Thank you, Ron and Jeffrey. As usual, there is more than one good answer here. I appreciate your time and attention.
