I am interested in your experiences with this roofing product; I have only heard the name but have no experience with it.
In particular: TPO, Modified Bitumen, and EPDM.
I note that they offer a self adhering application, and would like comments on any experience you might have with that. Also if anyone knows whether they manufacture their own membranes, or buy from others. Thanks.

I had specified Mule Hide Modified Bitumen products on several roofs in North Florida 8 years ago after Mule Hide pushed their products thru the state and several of my clients insisted we use them - big mistake, Mule Hide did not have certified installers nor did they have representatives available to inspect the work - we stopped specifying them and since than only specify GAF, JM, and Firestone for modified bits. I don’t know if Mule Hide has gotten their act together, just make sure they have the field support to stand by their product.
My understanding is that this company markets directly to Owners such as school districts. I haven’t had any problem with their systems, but tht only time I have every seen the product literature is in the hands of an owner’s rep.
I have a request for substitution for Mule-Hide adhered EPDM. They claim they train their installers, that there will be no effect (actually, the letter said “affect”) on the 15 year warranty, other trades, or anything else and that the substitution is “equal or superior to the specified item.”
The original specification was for Firestone Rubber Guard. Mule-Hide also claims that they manufacture their membranes.
Oddly enough, though, the request was directed to one of our marketing people, not the Project Architect.
Thoughts?
I typically specify 3 or 4 manufacturers for roofing. For mod. bit. it’s usually Siplast, Soprema, Firestone, & JM.
I’m not fond of GAF. I’ve had issues with them in the past.
My specs (Div. 01) are very clear on substitutions - If it doesn’t come from the manufacturer, CM, or GC to the PM for the project, on the form provided in the spec. they get rejected. Not using the form we provide means they probably haven’t seen the spec. so it’s probably not a proper substitution. Same goes for stuff sent to our marketing dept. It means they haven’t seen anything on the project.
I thought that Mule Hide did not manufacturer their own products and were just a “second labeler”. I don’t allow them in my specs.
Yes, my understanding was that Firestone and Carlisle were the only firms that manufactured EPDM membranes, and that other companies purchased their membranes from one of these two companies.
I’d appreciate being brought up to date on this, if it is not right.
Firestone and Carlisle are the only two domestic manufacturers of EPDM roofing. Any others who sell EPDM buy their products from one of the two.
I am not sure who the manufacturers of PVC and TPO are. Does anyone else know?
