Where can I find information on life cycle costs for building materials? Mainly I am looking for information to give to an owner concerning when they should expect to replace a material.

Please check out RS Means’ Facilities Maintenance & Repair Cost Data. Here are some examples: Roofing: Non-destructive moisture inspection- every 5 years; Total roof replacement- 28 years. Along with frequency in years, it also provides labor and materials cost data. Your local bookstore that sells technical books should have this yearly publication in stock. Good luck!

Since my firm does a lot of historic preservation projects, we have been asked by owners to do existing facility feasibility studies. The LCA information will be very useful for determining what needs repair/replacement/removal.
HVAC/R related lifespans are listed in the ASHRAE Applications manual (Owning and Operation Costs chapter); e.g., roof-top air conditioners are 15 yrs. I don’t know how they compare to Means…
